Our Curriculum

Children in our 7-12 year old programs get to have incredible adventures while making deep connections to the natural world. Through core routines, skill-building projects, storytelling and play, our youth develop confidence and proficiency in eight key areas of learning. Our instructors care-take safe environments within which students may experiment, learn, adventure, and grow in each of these key areas:

  • Nature Awareness and Knowledge of Place
  • Mammals and the Art of Tracking
  • Plants, Trees, and Ecological Principles
  • Landscape Navigation and the Art of Wandering
  • Survival & Wilderness Living Skills
  • Birding and Bird Language
  • Local Natural History and Heritage
  • Community Awareness and Stewardship

What the Day Looks Like

Each program maintains a ratio of 8-10 youth per 1 mentor; apprentices or adult volunteers may also join the program. Depending upon group size, part of the day is spent in large group activities (i.e., opening and closing circle, games, singing, storytelling, lunch), while most of the days, smaller groups called “clans” or “guilds” are formed.

  • Clans are smaller groups of children and are constant throughout the year with the same instructor to ensure individual attention and mentoring. Clans heads out during the day for their own adventures and learning experiences.
  • Guilds focus on a specific aspect or skill of the natural world (i.e., tracking, plant identification, scouting, or animal forms). Each quarter your child will choose a guild in order to explore more deeply one particular area of study.
  • Village Days allow the entire group to stay together for the whole day to do special projects.

The Fire Tenders take about three field trips throughout the program year. Generally, these are on-island adventures. We also bring guest instructors to our program to share a particular skill or area of expertise. Program instructors remain with their clan during these special days.
