Young Mentors – Summer Camp Volunteers

Our Young Mentors (YM) program is an incredible opportunity for teens to become authentic nature based mentors and leaders.

As a Summer Camp Volunteer, our YM play an essential role in the success of camp every week and are part of making the magic happen at Vashon Wilderness Program.

You will be paired with an adult instructor and assist them with:

  • nature-based games and outdoor skills/activities
  • group management
  • compassionate connections between children, nature, and themselves
  • fun for one and all!

Your responsibilities and activities will vary each week depending on the camp theme, your instructors, and your own imagination.

And, you’ll develop your leadership skills as you serve as a role model for younger campers.

I’m interested. Tell me more!

VWP Summer Camps for children are no ordinary summer camp! They are a place for children to make real and deep connections with nature, while having a great time learning about nature awareness, mammal tracking, survival skills, bird language, wild plants, and more.

YM receive valuable free training to become nature based mentors and choose from a variety of summer day camps to choose from. Camps for 4-6 year olds meet Monday – Friday from 9am-1pm. Camps for 7-12 year olds meet Monday – Friday 9am-1pm and 9:30am-3:30pm depending on the camp.

YM are present with the adult staff for 30-60 minutes prior to arrival and one hour after departure, for preparation and debrief. YM participate in a free training day before the camp season starts.
