Navigation in the Natural World

October 13th 2023

Coming together in a scotchbroom clearing prepared last year by many in our group we were greeted by Boletes, Puffballs, and many more mushrooms as well as a lovely Yew.

Three groups set off to wander throughout Camp Sealth, our 400 acre home!

One group waded through dense Salal and Huckleberry, the sky often obscured by the understory, while trying to stay oriented. This led into a grand story about getting lost in intense weather!

One group practiced using landmarks, the sun, marking trails and other methods of navigation before taking turns leading each other through the interspersed young Alder stands and more mature Hemlock, Doug Fir and Cedar groves. This journey brought many wonderful points of connection as they stumbled upon pristine skulls, avian kill sites, and Salamanders hidden under mushroom laden logs.
